Important Notice: Please note that the format of this auction differs from a traditional eBay Live auction in that only absentee bids are accepted. There is no live "bidding on the close" in which to participate. All lots offered in this auction will close at exactly the same time, as opposed to a traditional one at a time closing of lots, and therefore there is no live "one lot at a time" bidding close in which to participate. Your left bids will compete with all other left bids by auction participants. Bids may be placed on the eBay system at any time prior to 9:00 PM EST, May 1, 2004. No bids will be recognized or accepted when the eBay Live "live bidding applet" is run early in the morning of May 2, 2004 strictly for the purpose of officially registering and recording the final auction results.
1896 N301 Mayo Game Card and Scrapbook Die-Cut Collection (34) 34 assorted nineteenth century generic die-cut baseball cards, from two different series. 1896 N301 Mayo's Die-Cuts: Thirteen assorted (12 different) include: Pitcher NY, 1st Base Bos, 2nd Base Bos. (2), 2nd Base NY, 3rd Base Bos, 3rd Base NY, Short Stop Bos, Catcher Bos, Batman Bos, Runner Bos., Runner NY, Umpire (facing front), and Field Umpire (rear view). The Mayo's are a particularly interesting issue, because they feature advertising on their reverses and are a catalogued tobacco card set. While this issue has been overlooked by most collectors in large part because they do not feature likenesses of actual ballplayers, they are as rare, or rarer, than many which do. Nineteenth Century Die-Cuts: Twenty-one assorted include: Baltimore (2), Boston (2), Brooklyn (2), Chicago (2), Detroit (3), Indianapolis (2), New York (2), Philadelphia (2), Pittsburgh (2), and St. Louis. The uniforms of these colorful scrapbook die-cuts represent many of baseball's major franchise cities of the nineteenth century. Little is known about exactly how these die-cuts were issued, but it is believed they were produced to be glued into scrapbooks, which was a popular pastime of the day. An impressive collection of these rare and very colorful nineteenth century baseball die-cut cards. Condition ranges from Very Good to Excellent. Total 34 cards. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000/$1,500.
