Important Notice: Please note that the format of this auction differs from a traditional eBay Live auction in that only absentee bids are accepted. There is no live "bidding on the close" in which to participate. All lots offered in this auction will close at exactly the same time, as opposed to a traditional one at a time closing of lots, and therefore there is no live "one lot at a time" bidding close in which to participate. Your left bids will compete with all other left bids by auction participants. Bids may be placed on the eBay system at any time prior to 9:00 PM EST, May 1, 2004. No bids will be recognized or accepted when the eBay Live "live bidding applet" is run early in the morning of May 2, 2004 strictly for the purpose of officially registering and recording the final auction results.

1914 Boston Red Sox Fenway Park Opening Day Panoramic Photo

Large panoramic photo (7.5 x 43 inches) features the Boston Red Sox and the Washington Senators posed for a special group shot on Opening Day at Fenway Park in 1914. Dated April 14, 1914, the photograph includes an incredible 56 players between the two teams, standing on the field with Fenway Park's grandstands in the background. Included are stars such as Tris Speaker (imaged twice on the photo), Walter Johnson, Joe Wood, Harry Hooper, Dutch Leonard, Chick Gandil, and Clark Griffith. Tris Speaker, as noted, is pictured in the photo twice, once on the left side, and once on the right. Because of the mechanics of producing such a long panoramic photograph, players would sometimes take advantage of the opportunity to appear in the photo twice, changing positions during the multi-shot photographic process, as a joke. Along the bottom of the photo, in white lettering, is the following caption: "Opening Game of the Season at Fenway Park, 'Boston Red Sox' and Washington 'Senators' April 14th 1914, Boston Mass." The photographer's name appears in the lower right, also in white lettering ("Photo by Riley & George, 55 Gray St, Boston, Mass"). There is some water damage, which has caused the photograph in several places to stick to the glass, primarily along the perimeter, which does not significantly affect the image. Close inspection reveals a couple of small tears and a small hole in the lower left. Despite imperfections, this is still a very rare, unusual, and impressive early panoramic photo with tremendous eye appeal, which has been beautifully framed for ideal display. Reserve $800. Estimate $1,500/$2,500.
