Important Notice: Please note that the format of this auction differs from a traditional eBay Live auction in that only absentee bids are accepted. There is no live "bidding on the close" in which to participate. All lots offered in this auction will close at exactly the same time, as opposed to a traditional one at a time closing of lots, and therefore there is no live "one lot at a time" bidding close in which to participate. Your left bids will compete with all other left bids by auction participants. Bids may be placed on the eBay system at any time prior to 9:00 PM EST, May 1, 2004. No bids will be recognized or accepted when the eBay Live "live bidding applet" is run early in the morning of May 2, 2004 strictly for the purpose of officially registering and recording the final auction results.
1910 Christy Mathewson Won In The Ninth Signed Presentation Edition 1910 special signed presentation hardcover first edition of Won In The Ninth by Christy Mathewson ("9"). This is the ultimate Christy Mathewson signed book, with special bookplate signed by Mathewson affixed to the interior cover. This is Presentation Copy #241, presented to sportswriter Mr. Harry Neily (1884-1948). Neily was a charter member of the BBWAA. He was sports editor of the St. Louis Times prior to serving as business manager of the St. Louis Federals in 1914, and later served almost two decades with the Chicago American. It is unknown exactly how many special presentation copies Mathewson signed, but we believe the total to be 500. Very few have survived. This is the ideal signed Mathewson presentation book, as it is the only title by Mathewson which features a photograph of Mathewson on the cover, making it ideal for display. The 298-page book of baseball fiction has a special instructional section in the back. Published in 1910 by the R.J. Bodmer Company of New York. A slightly better example was offered in the Halper auction, where it appeared as lot #410 and realized $16,100. One of the finest signed Mathewson books in existence, with an incredibly bold, essentially flawless signature. In Excellent condition. LOAs from Mike Gutierrez/GAI and James Spence & Steve Grad/PSA DNA. Reserve $2,500. Estimate $5,000/$10,000. ImagesClick on thumbnails to see larger images:
