Important Notice: Please note that the format of this auction differs from a traditional eBay Live auction in that only absentee bids are accepted. There is no live "bidding on the close" in which to participate. All lots offered in this auction will close at exactly the same time, as opposed to a traditional one at a time closing of lots, and therefore there is no live "one lot at a time" bidding close in which to participate. Your left bids will compete with all other left bids by auction participants. Bids may be placed on the eBay system at any time prior to 9:00 PM EST, May 1, 2004. No bids will be recognized or accepted when the eBay Live "live bidding applet" is run early in the morning of May 2, 2004 strictly for the purpose of officially registering and recording the final auction results.

1963 Topps "Astronauts" Original Artwork (2)

The Astronauts set was produced by Topps in 1963, at the dawn of the space age. At this time every kid in America wanted to be an astronaut. It is not surprising that Topps would respond to this enthusiasm by producing a set of cards honoring these national heroes. The set features artworks based on NASA photographs of America's space explorers, their training exercises and equipment. Presented are two pieces of original artwork, which together represent both the front and back of card #10 of Alan Shepard, from the 1963 Topps Astronauts set. The artwork to the front of the card is a traditional color flexichrome original artwork of Alan Shepard, measuring 3.5 x 5 inches. It is in Near Mint condition. The production artwork to the back of the card measures 5 x 7.5 inches, and is quite unusual. This artwork is actually comprised of numerous layers of mylar production art overlay, with the artwork of space and the planet Saturn presented in a manner allowing for the 3-D effect of the final printed product (the backs were intended to be viewed using special cellophane 3-D glasses). This is the actual production art used to create the reverse of the card. It is also in Near Mint condition. Included with the artworks are two examples of the issued card. All are beautifully matted and ready for framing. This is a very unusual, and rarely seen matched front and back pair of artworks from one of the most historically significant non-sport sets ever issued. Reserve $200. Estimate $400/$600.
