Important Notice: Please note that the format of this auction differs from a traditional eBay Live auction in that only absentee bids are accepted. There is no live "bidding on the close" in which to participate. All lots offered in this auction will close at exactly the same time, as opposed to a traditional one at a time closing of lots, and therefore there is no live "one lot at a time" bidding close in which to participate. Your left bids will compete with all other left bids by auction participants. Bids may be placed on the eBay system at any time prior to 9:00 PM EST, May 1, 2004. No bids will be recognized or accepted when the eBay Live "live bidding applet" is run early in the morning of May 2, 2004 strictly for the purpose of officially registering and recording the final auction results.
Unbelievable Ty Cobb Single Signed Baseball, with Accompanying Letter From Card and Mailing Label Official National League (Giles) baseball signed with gorgeous aqua-blue fountain pen signature by Ty Cobb ("9") on side panel. This is a most extraordinary example, signed with salutation and date as follows: "To William Lengfelder, From Ty Cobb, 3/23/60." The baseball is in pristine Near Mint to Mint condition, lustrous and white, simply as fine an example as could possibly exist. Accompanying the ball is a one-page handwritten letter by Ty Cobb, on Scottsdale, Arizona, Ramada Inn stationary, dated "3/23/60," which reads as follows: "Dear Mr. Lengfelder, You made a deal, here is the ball, only thing was convenient to get a National League ball, hope this doesn't make any difference. Make your check to Cobb Educational Foundation. I never accept any fees and that for 5 years all funds go to my foundation. Thanks, I am, Sincerely, Ty Cobb." A postscript reads "The above address will get me for two or three weeks, here convalescing." The letter is also in Near Mint to Mint condition, with signature and all writing virtually flawless ("9+" on a scale of "1 to 10.") Incredibly, the single-signed ball and related letter are also accompanied by the original mailing label, also handwritten by Cobb, which is addressed to William Lengfelder and includes Cobb's signature yet a third time (signed "T.R. Cobb"), as part of the return address. Though seemingly at odds with his image, Cobb was actually very involved with charitable concerns, especially toward the end of his life. Mr. Lengfelder apparently made a "deal" with Cobb for a signed baseball, which Cobb himself supplied, with proceeds to go to Cobb's foundation. All Ty Cobb single-signed balls are truly scarce, far rarer than baseballs signed by the much more popular and approachable Babe Ruth. The offered example is one of the finest Ty Cobb singles in existence. The fact that it is accompanied by a letter from Cobb, both specifically referencing and authenticating the ball, as well as the original mailing label, combine to make this single-signed ball one of the most ideal and unique examples that could possibly exist. The ball and letter are in Near Mint to Mint condition. The mailing label has a bite in the upper right corner and is otherwise in Vg-Ex condition. All three Ty Cobb signatures (ball, letter, and mailing label) grade '9' on a scale of 1 to 10. An outstanding and unique trio of Ty Cobb signed items. LOAs from Mike Gutierrez/GAI and James Spence & Steve Grad/PSA DNA. Reserve $3,000. Estimate $7,000/$10,000. ImagesClick on thumbnails to see larger images:
