1920 NY Yankees at White Sox Program with Ruth and Jackson

1920 program issued to commemorate a game between the New York Yankees and the Chicago White Sox. The biggest scandal in baseball history had just occurred the prior year, in 1919. Details of the scandal "broke" in 1920. The Black Sox took the field in 1920 with a cloud over their heads. Headlines blared, lawyers were retained, rumors flourished. On August 4th, 1920, Babe Ruth and the NY Yankees visited Comiskey Park to square off against the Chicago White Sox. The White Sox starting line-up for the day included four of the eight players involved in "the fix," including Joe Jackson, Buck Weaver, Oscar Felsch, and Swede Risberg. The starting pitchers for the game were Chicago's Dickie Kerr and New York's George Mogridge. The White Sox, perhaps trying to atone for past sins, crushed the Yankees 10 to 3. This would be the last year that Babe Ruth and Joe Jackson would ever appear in the same game. The program is neatly scored in pencil. The inside pages are clean and tight with a light tan color. The cover features a portrait photo of Charles Comiskey. 20 pages. 6 x 9 inches. The paper stock on which these programs are printed is very cheap (no doubt courtesy of the notoriously frugal Charles Comiskey) and very susceptible to tears. This high-grade example is free of tears. White Sox programs from this era are rarely found this nice. Exceptionally strong Ex-Mt condition. Reserve $200. Estimate $400/$600.
