Important Notice: Please note that the format of this auction differs from a traditional eBay Live auction in that only absentee bids are accepted. There is no live "bidding on the close" in which to participate. All lots offered in this auction will close at exactly the same time, as opposed to a traditional one at a time closing of lots, and therefore there is no live "one lot at a time" bidding close in which to participate. Your left bids will compete with all other left bids by auction participants. Bids may be placed on the eBay system at any time prior to 9:00 PM EST, May 1, 2004. No bids will be recognized or accepted when the eBay Live "live bidding applet" is run early in the morning of May 2, 2004 strictly for the purpose of officially registering and recording the final auction results.
1934 Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig Signed Same Panel Ball Official American League (Harridge) ball was first signed by 20 members of the Boston Red Sox in 1934, and at a later date, when the Yankees came to town, was then boldly signed by Babe Ruth (9/10) and Lou Gehrig (9/10) on the same panel. It is extremely rare to see Ruth and Gehrig on the same panel, as it was almost always the case that Ruth signed the sweet spot, and Gehrig signed on a side panel. In this unusual case, Red Sox players had already taken the sweet spot and most of the side panels, so Ruth and Gehrig were left to sign on the only space available, flawlessly signing the same side panel in bold black fountain pen. This is the first Ruth/Gehrig ball we have seen with signatures on the same panel. The Red Sox signatures include: Lefty Grove (sweet spot), Rick Ferrell, Bucky Walters, Solters, Ostermueller, Rhodes, W. Ferrell, R. Johnson, Bishop, Werber, Cissell, Hinkle, Lary, H. Johnson, Walberg, Reynolds, Morgan, and three others we could not identify. These signatures are light and grade a 5/10 overall. The legend of "The Curse of the Bambino" gives the signing of this Red Sox team ball by Babe Ruth an additional dimension of interest. The ball is off-white with slightly faded stampings and grades Ex to Nr/Mt. LOAs from Mike Gutierrez/GAI and James Spence & Steve Grad/PSA DNA. Reserve $2,000. Estimate $4,000/$6,000.
