Important Notice: Please note that the format of this auction differs from a traditional eBay Live auction in that only absentee bids are accepted. There is no live "bidding on the close" in which to participate. All lots offered in this auction will close at exactly the same time, as opposed to a traditional one at a time closing of lots, and therefore there is no live "one lot at a time" bidding close in which to participate. Your left bids will compete with all other left bids by auction participants. Bids may be placed on the eBay system at any time prior to 9:00 PM EST, May 1, 2004. No bids will be recognized or accepted when the eBay Live "live bidding applet" is run early in the morning of May 2, 2004 strictly for the purpose of officially registering and recording the final auction results.
Babe Ruth Signed Golf Ball Golf ball signed and inscribed by baseball immortal Babe Ruth. The ball is signed "To Mrs. (illegible)/From/Babe Ruth" ("6/7") in black ink. Ruth signed thousands of baseballs in his day, but we suspect he signed very few golf balls. This is the first we have seen. Ruth was an avid golfer when away from the diamond, especially following his retirement from baseball. This ball has "No. Conway G.C." preprinted on one side (short for "North Conway Golf Club"), and the personalization of golf pro "Ben Roman" preprinted on the opposite side. It was probably somewhat challenging for Ruth to sign such a small and dimpled sphere, but perhaps because of his considerable experience signing baseballs, Ruth has done quite an admirable job. The dimples do make the inscription and signature appear a little shaky and broken in places, as should be expected, but all things considered, this is as fine a Babe Ruth signature as one could reasonably expect to find on a golf ball. The signature is perfectly legible, and quite large for being signed on such a small item. The ball is in Excellent condition. A very unusual, possibly unique, signed Babe Ruth item relating to the Yankee legend's second favorite sporting pastime. LOAs from Mike Gutierrez/GAI and James Spence & Steve Grad/PSA DNA. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000/$2,000. ImagesClick on thumbnails to see larger images:
