Important Notice: Please note that the format of this auction differs from a traditional eBay Live auction in that only absentee bids are accepted. There is no live "bidding on the close" in which to participate. All lots offered in this auction will close at exactly the same time, as opposed to a traditional one at a time closing of lots, and therefore there is no live "one lot at a time" bidding close in which to participate. Your left bids will compete with all other left bids by auction participants. Bids may be placed on the eBay system at any time prior to 9:00 PM EST, May 1, 2004. No bids will be recognized or accepted when the eBay Live "live bidding applet" is run early in the morning of May 2, 2004 strictly for the purpose of officially registering and recording the final auction results.
1935 Babe Ruth Christmas Signed Check to Daughter Julia Babe Ruth personal check, representing a Christmas gift in the amount of $50 and dated December 25, 1935, is made out to Ruth's daughter "Julia Ruth." The entire check is filled out in Ruth's hand. The check is beautifully signed "G.H. Ruth" ("9/10") in bold, blue ink. The signature is completely untouched by the normal bank cancellation marks and stamps. Julia has endorsed the reverse of the check. Julia Ruth (later Stevens) was the daughter of Ruth and his second wife, Claire Hodgson. Julia later preserved her loving memories of her father in a book entitled Major League Dad (Benchmark Press, 2001). This is a particularly interesting check, both because of its very personal nature, being made out to his daughter on Christmas, and because in writing the check out to his daughter, Ruth has also provided half of a second signature in the process. The check has a very fine 1.5-inch tear in the upper left that bisects the check number, however there is no paper loss, and the tear does not in any way affect the signature or any writing, or significantly detract from the appearance of its otherwise superb Excellent condition. LOAs from Mike Gutierrez/GAI and James Spence & Steve Grad/PSA DNA. Reserve $1,000. Estimate $2,000/$4,000. ImagesClick on thumbnails to see larger images:
