Important Notice: Please note that the format of this auction differs from a traditional eBay Live auction in that only absentee bids are accepted. There is no live "bidding on the close" in which to participate. All lots offered in this auction will close at exactly the same time, as opposed to a traditional one at a time closing of lots, and therefore there is no live "one lot at a time" bidding close in which to participate. Your left bids will compete with all other left bids by auction participants. Bids may be placed on the eBay system at any time prior to 9:00 PM EST, May 1, 2004. No bids will be recognized or accepted when the eBay Live "live bidding applet" is run early in the morning of May 2, 2004 strictly for the purpose of officially registering and recording the final auction results.

1935 Negro National League Broadside

Extraordinary Negro National League broadside features composite photographs of six of the eight teams comprising the Negro National League: the Homestead Grays, Pittsburgh Crawfords, Chicago American Giants, Brooklyn Eagles, New York Cubans, and the Nashville Elite Giants. The broadside-maker apparently was not provided with composite team photographs of the Philadelphia Stars and the Newark Dodgers, who are represented by name only in the display. These eight teams represent the entire Negro National League for the season of 1935. The broadside is designed with a large blank space in the center, provided to allow room for the addition of the name of the team advertised to play against the Nashville Elite Giants, and to provide space for additional details regarding the scheduled game, such as time and place. This is a simply astounding Negro League poster, featuring photographs of literally 75% of the players in the entire league. It is very rare for Negro League posters, especially from this era, to picture a team or even a single player. In later years, Satchel Paige was featured on several broadside designs. Occasionally a very obscure black team is pictured on an early broadside. But it is almost never the case that major teams of the Negro National League are pictured on any broadside, let alone many teams, all on a single broadside. There is simply no other poster or Negro League display piece from the era, of any kind, featuring team composites of Negro National League teams. This broadside is in its own league as far as Negro League display items. Included are countless stars, such as Willie Wells, Turkey Stearnes, Cool Papa Bell, Josh Gibson, Smokey Joe Williams, etc., as well as countless long forgotten journeymen of the 1930s Negro Leagues. The broadside is in overall Good condition, with paper loss in the four corners, and some creasing and foxing. Despite imperfections, the broadside displays beautifully, and captures the spirit of the Depression era Negro National League perhaps better than any other 1930s Negro League display piece. Measures 21.5 x 27.25 inches. Beautifully matted and framed to dimensions of 29 x 35 inches. Reserve $1,000. Estimate $2,000/$4,000.
