Important Notice: Please note that the format of this auction differs from a traditional eBay Live auction in that only absentee bids are accepted. There is no live "bidding on the close" in which to participate. All lots offered in this auction will close at exactly the same time, as opposed to a traditional one at a time closing of lots, and therefore there is no live "one lot at a time" bidding close in which to participate. Your left bids will compete with all other left bids by auction participants. Bids may be placed on the eBay system at any time prior to 9:00 PM EST, May 1, 2004. No bids will be recognized or accepted when the eBay Live "live bidding applet" is run early in the morning of May 2, 2004 strictly for the purpose of officially registering and recording the final auction results.
1948 Chesterfield Advertising Display This extremely colorful cardboard advertising display is universally recognized as the premier baseball-related advertising display of its era, and one of the best baseball-related advertising pieces ever produced. The extremely high quality poster features portraits of Joe DiMaggio, Ted Williams, Stan Musial, Bucky Harris, Bob Elliot, and Ewell Blackwell, surrounding a large pack, each endorsing Chesterfield cigarettes. It is fascinating to note that, upon close examination, it is obvious that the players are not actually smoking. Chesterfield has simply cropped a cigarette into the mouths of Musial, DiMaggio, Elliot, and Harris. The poster has had some very professional restoration executed primarily along the bottom edge to restore it to its original state. This is extremely well done, and difficult to detect without specifically looking for the work. While the restoration will, of course, impact the value of the piece, it does not significantly affect its extraordinary display value. The poster has a magnificent Excellent appearance. The auction record for an unrestored example of this classic advertising display is slightly more than $50,000. Reserve $2,000. Estimate $4,000/$6,000. ImagesClick on thumbnails to see larger images:
