Circa 1940 Lou Gehrig Reach Stand-Up Counter Display

Reach, Wright & Ditson die-cut cardboard counter display advertising for softball equipment, and featuring an image of an unidentified ballplayer obviously based on Lou Gehrig. It is fascinating to see the use of Gehrig's likeness on this sign, without proper identification and credit, and presumably without permission as well. It may be the case that Reach, Wright & Ditson was attempting to use Gehrig's likeness without pay, with the intention of claiming that the ballplayer featured is a generic image. We cannot imagine this ballplayer being mistaken for anyone but Lou Gehrig. The sign measures 19 x 12 inches. The original cardboard easel back is still on the reverse. In Excellent condition. Reserve $200. Estimate $400/$600.
