1948 Swell Sport Thrills Collection (40)

Forty assorted cards from this very unusual and, in our opinion, very overlooked 20-card set issued by Swell Bubble Gum in 1948. Entitled "Sports Thrills," the set is devoted to great moments in baseball history. Perhaps because it is not a part of a series of sets, such as Topps and Bowman, this very scarce issue simply has never been "on the radar" of most postwar gum card collectors. The collection of 40 cards includes 19 different cards, representing a complete set shy one card (missing only #2 Pete Reiser), plus 21 additional cards, including duplicates of many stars. Condition ranges from Vg-Ex to Ex-Mt, averaging Ex. Near set keys grade as follows: #3 Jackie Robinson (Ex), 4 Walter Johnson (Ex-Mt), 12 Gehrig/Ruth (Ex-Mt), 14 Gehrig (Vg-Ex), 16 DiMaggio/Ted Williams (Vg-Ex), 18 Pee Wee Reese (Ex), 19 Feller (Ex-Mt). Additional highlights among 21 duplicates: Three #4 Johnson (2 Ex-Mt, 1 Ex), 16 DiMaggio/Williams (Vg-Ex), two 19 Feller (both Ex-Mt). Total of 40 cards. Reserve $200. Estimate $400/$800.
