DESCRIPTION: Prentiss Taylor (American, 1907-1991). Watercolor on paper embossed with "Veritable Papier D'Arches Torchon". Sunday -Santa Fe Plaza. Depicts an active plaza overwhelmed by trees. Titled in pencil in the lower left corner. Signed at the lower right "Prentiss Taylor 13:IX:60-24:II:61". In metallic painted frame with fabric matte. n illustrator, lithographer, and painter, Prentiss Taylor was born in Washington, D.C. and began his studies at the Corcoran Gallery or Art, followed by training at the Art Students League in New York City. He established the Washington Wheat Press as a means for publishing. During his time in New York City, he developed a relationship with Langston Hughes. Together they created the Golden Stair Press in 1931, issuing broadsides and books with illustrations by Taylor and texts by Hughes reflecting the ideas of the Harlem Renaissance. MEASUREMENTS: 21-3/4" x 29-3/4". Overall with frame 25-3/4" x 33-3/4". CONDITION: Scratching and chipping to paint on frame.
