Description
DESCRIPTION: Edouard Leon Cortes (French, 1882-1969). Oil on canvas. Parisian street scene at dusk. Signed at lower right "Edouard Cortes". In wood and gesso frame. PROVENANCE: Purchased in 1960 by the consignor's mother, while residing in Austin, Texas, from the William Bradford Art Gallery. William Bradford was a dealer of Cortes's work and had purchased the painting in Paris years before in order to sell it at his Texas gallery. Born into a family of artists in Paris, 1882, he trained at his father's studio in his youth. When he was 16, before receiving his formal education at the National French Art School in Paris, Cortes first exhibited his work at the national exhibition of the Societe des Artistes Francais in Paris, 1899. In 1901 Cortes began his long tradition of painting different vignettes of Paris. MEASUREMENTS: 12-5/8" x 17-5/9". Overall with frame 11" x 27-1/2". CONDITION: Could benefit from a cleaning. Pin mark in the middle of the painting originally placed there by the artist as a point of origin for the perspective. Chips and losses to frame.
