This far-eastern painting by the Balinese painter Ida Bagus Made Togog (1913-1989) depicts a ritual temple scene in a colorful, densely assembled environment with the gathered villagers. According to the inscription, it is the Batuan village in Bali. The villagers have gathered in front of a temple to view a ritual dancing act. Different figures dressed in traditional clothing accompany the ritual with festive rites. The scene is surrounded by a thicket of the Balinese jungle and some animals. Through Togog we get an insight into the religion and the local myths of Bali from a perspective of a native of that country. Togog comes from a priest family and thereby possesses of a broad knowledge of the ‘lontar’, the religious literature of the Balinese.



The painting is signed lower right ‘Ida Bagus Made Togog’ and inscribed ‘Batuan Bali’. Work and frame are in very good condition with minimal traces of age and wear. The frame shows tiny singular color chippings. The stretcher frame measures 52 x 64 cm and the total dimensions, including the frame, are 61 x 72.5 cm.



Ida Bagus Made Togog (1913-1989)

Togog was one of the most important Balinese painters of the 20th century. As a member of a priest family he placed the focus of his work on the religious life of his home country. He depicted in his work the complex religious traditions of the multifaceted life in and around the temple. Together with I Ngendon he was one of the pioneers of painting in Bali. Gregory Bateson and Margaret Mead commissioned Togog between 1936 and 1938 for a Bali project to paint his dreams and he created 83 paintings in total for them. His work can be found in numerous collections, both in Europe and in Bali.
