Description
with the Skeletons of some of the Lower Animals, 2 parts in one, 38 engraved plates by Edward Mitchell, circular library stamps of the Royal Medical Society Edinburgh on first title and reverse of all plates, with further, neat linear stamps of the Society to engraved area of second part plates, some minor spotting and marking mostly to margins but overall internally very good, later calf-backed cloth, morocco spine label, a handsome copy, folio, Edinburgh, 1819. One of Britain's most esteemed anatomists & teachers, John Barclay was a fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and the Royal Society of Edinburgh and taught at the Edinburgh College of Surgeons, to whom he bequeathed his specimens, and the Edinburgh College of Physicians. The excellent engravings by Mitchell focus primarily on the human skeleton shown from all angles and in great detail, clearly inspired by the works of Albinus and Sue, but the volume also includes three unnumbered plates from a prospectus for a work on vertebrate skeletons which Mitchell never published, including a striking image of an elephant with a skeleton driver, or mahout .
