Catalogue Note: George Armfield (1808-1893) was a British artist who specialized in paintings of dogs in rural settings. Born in Wales, Armfield achieved success as a painter at an early age when he first began to sell his works. He thereafter sustained a long career providing art to British clients, particularly wealthy Londoners. Known for his love of animals, Armfield apparently kept a large and diverse collection of creatures in his home and often painted his subjects from life in this respect. He was also an avid sportsman who regularly went hunting. Unfortunately, he was also fond of gambling and free spending and died, nearly blind, in a state of severe poverty. The present lot is a classic example of Armfield's work in a large, bold format.
