JOHN CHRISTIAN SCHETKY (BRITISH, 1778-1874), ATTRIBUTED, MARINE DRAWING, watercolor, gouache, and pencil on paper, an atmospheric work depicting a three-masted gun ship and smaller vessel passing a mountainous coastline. No signature located. Period label verso for "J. Portch / Print & Drawing Mounter" with old inked inscription attributing to "J. C. Schetky". Matted under glass in an old gold-painted frame. Mid 19th century. 9 1/2" x 14" sight, 16" x 20" OA.

Catalogue Note: John Christian Schetky (1778-1874) was an important British artist and marine painter. Born in Scotland to immigrant parents of Hungarian descent, Schetky attended the Royal High School in Edinburgh, where he developed a life-long friendship with Walter Scott, the soon-to-be-famous Romantic novelist. Schetky taught at numerous institutions of note, including Oxford and the Royal Naval College, and exhibited on multiple occasions at the Royal Academy. His fame was such that he was the appointed Royal Marine Painter to George IV, William IV, and Queen Victoria. This drawing was reportedly a gift from the artist to the great-great-grandmother of the consignor, Maurice Derby Leach, and was a part of the collection of his great-uncle, Kenneth Henry Leach. This was the same collection that included the 17th-century Samuel Betts bracket clock which sold at JSE & Associates on June 21, 2014 for $109,250.
