Description
GEORGE H. MCCORD (AMERICAN, 1848-1909), ATTRIBUTED, COASTAL LANDSCAPE DRAWING / SKETCH, pencil on paper, a delightful study of boats and fisherman on a tranquil inlet or bay, possibly executed in preparation for a larger work in oil. Inscribed "Marblehead" lower left. Old label verso inscribed "Artist - George H. McCord A. N. A. / From his / Daughter's Collection". Matted under glass in a modern black-painted frame. Third quarter 19th century. 4 1/2" x 7" sight, 9 1/2" x 11 1/2" OA.
Catalogue Note: George H. McCord (1848-1909) is associated with the second generation of Hudson River School painters and received wide recognition for his works during his lifetime. McCord grew up in New Jersey and, after studying with Samuel F. B. Morse, settled in Brooklyn for much of the rest of his life. He traveled the country extensively painting landscapes and marine scenes and was commissioned late in his career to paint scenes of the Grand Canyon in a promotional capacity for the Sante Fe Railroad. The present small drawing was possibly done as a preparatory sketch for a larger work.
