English School (17th century), PORTRAIT OF JAMES MONTAGU, (c.1608-1665), HALF LENGTH WEARING A BREAST PLATE, WHITE SHIRT AND RED SCARF Oil on canvas 74.5 x 62.5cm Provenance: by descent to the sitter's daughter Mary who married Thomas Ewer of Bushey Hall, Hertfordshire; by descent to Jane, his daughter, who married Anthony Ashley Cooper, 3rd Earl of Shaftsbury on 29 August 1709; thence by descent to Anthony Ashley Cooper, 10th Earl of Shaftsbury, his sale, Christie's 24th July 1980, lot 3. The sitter was the third son of Henry Montagu, 1st Earl of Manchester. On 11th November 1635 he married Mary, daughter of Sir Robert Baynard of Lackham, Wiltshire, from whom he inherited the Lackham estates.
