This is a map of the near side of the moon, which is based on the photographs of the Lunar Orbiter IV. It was created in 1969 by Donald E. Wilhelms & John F. McCauley, who were both United States Geological Survey geologists of the second half of the 20th century. They contributed to the geological mapping of the moon. The map is executed in print and bears the handwritten inscriptions ‘Department of the Interior United States Geological Survey’, ‘Prepared in cooperation with the national aeronautics and space administration and the USAF aeronautical chart and information center’, ‘Source of geologic information: Lunar Orbiter IV photographs, prepared under NASA contract R-66’, ‘Base: U.S. Air Force, reference mosaic, LEM-1, 2nd edition, 1962’. It is titled in pen ‘Preliminary Geologic Map of the Near Side of the Moon by Don E. Wilhelms and John F. McCauley 1969’. There is a stamp ‘This report is preliminary and has not been edited or reviewed for conformity with U.S. Geological Survey standards and nomenclature’. The map is a preliminary version of the in 1971 in color published ‘Geologic Map of the Near Side of the Moon’. A piece from the early history of the exploration of space.



The map of the moon is in used condition, on the lower right is a tear and there is marginal wear and singularly small staining and handling creases. The dimensions of the map are 85 x 89 cm.
