George Barris was a close friend of Marilyn Monroe (1926-1962); his pictures of the actress are therefore very intimate and already achieved a record of 3,000 Euros at an international auction

The present photograph by the American artist George Barris depicts a portrait of the superstar Marilyn Monroe, who was the most famous and probably the most photographed woman in the world. Barris had already met Marilyn in 1954 and developed a very close friendly relationship to her. So it was George Barris, who took the last photograph of Marilyn Monroe on July 13, 1962.



The C-print is signed with felt pen lower right ‘George Barris’. Verso, it is numbered and inscribed with pen ‘7/99, George Barris’ as well as stamped in red ‘„© COPYRIGHT 1987 MARILYN MONROE/WESTON EDITIONS LTD.’. The work is verso mounted with two hinges in a passe-partout; accordingly, there is some light-staining along the edges. The image size is equal to the sheet size and measures 25.5 x 20.2 cm. The framed work measures 51 x 44 cm.



George Barris (b. 1922)

George Barris was born in New York City. His first camera was given to him by his brother Willie for his sixth birthday. Fascinated by the device, he soon learnt to operate it, always carrying one with him. He was an official army photographer in the Second World War from 1942 to 1945. He became a freelance photographer after the war. Travelling through the US and Canada, he took many photographs of events and celebrities, including Steve McQueen, Charlie Chaplin, Marlon Brando, John Wayne, Elizabeth Taylor, Clark Gable, Frank Sinatra and Marilyn Monroe.
