The present work is a later C-print of a picture by Nan Goldin depicting the honey moon suite of the popular Berlin hotel ‘Nürnberger Eck’, where also other artists such as Helmut Newton occasionally worked. The light cones of the lamps remind of flames and render the room an erotic, if not unbridled atmosphere, where sexual fantasies appear to be acted out. The oblique perspective gives an open view of the large double bed and yet the picture refuses to provide all information to the depicted scenery, as the pillows and blankets are only slightly crumpled and the presence of people remains uncertain.

The C-print is verso signed and numbered on a label ‘Nan Goldin 4/25’. Besides, it is also titled, inscribed and dated ‘Honeymoon Suite, Nürnberger Eck, Berlin 1994’, here. The surface of the C-print is only slightly scratchy. The image size is equal to the overall dimensions of 41.6 x 60.3 cm.

Nan Goldin (b. 1953)

Nan Goldin was born in 1953 in Washington, D.C. She began her artistic career as an amateur photographer and already participated in exhibitions at that time. In 1974, she began to study at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston and graduated in 1978. She then moved to New York and frequently visited Berlin, where many of her pictures were taken. In her works, Goldin mainly deals with provocative and hard-hitting topics such as drug addiction and aids. Some of her pictures also deal with personal issues, since many of her sitters are actually her friends or acquaintances, whose lives and deaths are captured with the camera. (cbo)
