This portrait of the famous German artist Gerhard Richter (b. 1932) was created by Benjamin Katz – a photographer, who captures the fleeting moments at performances and art-related events. Thereby, he creates enduring portraits of artists, patrons and other participants of the art and culture scene. Gerhard Richter is smiling at the viewer from a mirror that he is holding in his right hand. The photograph was taken in 1984, the year when the artist was represented in the exhibition ‘Von hier aus – Zwei Monate neue deutsche Kunst’ in Düsseldorf.



The photograph is dated, signed and numbered verso in black ink pen ‘1984/91/ Benjamin Katz 26/50’ and is marked with the copyright stamp Benjamin Katz, Cologne. Handling creases are visible. The photograph is besides that in good condition. The image size is 26.3 x 18 cm and the dimensions of the sheet are 28.5 x 20.1 cm.



Benjamin Katz (b. 1939)

A native of Antwerp, Benjamin Katz moved to Berlin at the age of 17. Here, he studied at the Hochschule für Bildende Künste. In 1963, at his first gallery opening, works by Georg Baselitz were seized by the German public prosecution department because of indecent content. Katz remained being active as a gallery owner and he is still a close friend of Georg Baselitz. In 1972, he moved to Cologne, where he worked as a chronicler and essayist. Since 1976, he works as a self-employed photographer. He is mainly known for his photographs of art and culture events. From 2006 until 2008, he taught photography at the Art Academy of Düsseldorf. He took part in a number of national and international exhibitions with his photographs.
