These are six photographs of ‘construction art/construction technique’ from the twenties and thirties by the German photographer Albert Renger-Patzsch (1897-1966). Albert Renger-Patzsch is regarded an advocate of the objective photo style. His work ‘The world is beautiful’ (1928) contains 100 cutouts-like represented subject matters of the flora and the art of constructing for example. The stamps on the reverse prove that Albert Renger-Patzsch took these photos for the Folkwang Verlag, whose image archivist he was. The prints were made from the negatives under the supervision of Ernst Fuhrmann, the director of the publishing house. Fuhrmann gave the archive to Wilhelm Arnholdt when he left Germany.



Each photograph bears verso on the cardboard a typographically inscribed label with information of title, date and photographer. They are all verso also stamped ‘Photo: Albert Renger-Patzsch’ and ‘Wilhelm Arnholdt Maschinensetzerei Hamburg 20, Falkenried 42’. The six photographs show minimal abrasion and small scratches and are in an overall good condition. The dimensions are each 16.5 x 23 cm.



Albert Renger-Patzsch (1897-1966)

Albert Renger-Patzsch began photography at an early age of twelve. After he served in WWII he studied chemistry in Dresden. He was the publisher of a number of photography books with scientific illustrations. His style is concentrated on sharply focused and realistic motifs that represent New Objectivity well. Renger-Patzsch proclaimed the view that the value of photography lies in the ability to reproduce the reality of an object. His archives had been destroyed entirely during WWII. After the war he moved to Wamel, Möhnsee and lived there for the rest of his life. (tm)
