Thai Praying Temple Figure
Thai, late 18th - early 19th century. Gilded wood temple ornament representing a praying figure, probably an Apsara (beautiful female of the clouds and waters known for its elegant dancing). This figure is emblematic of Siamese architecture, with curves and points. The back of the sculpture is unfinished, which indicates that the piece was meant to be displayed frontally among the iconography of a temple. Ht. 9 in.
Provenance: Property of the Zanesville Museum of Art, Zanesville, OH. Sold to Benefit the Acquisition Fund.
