SIZE: Approx. 9" x 12".

GENTRY was a lavishly illustrated and produced monthly magazine published by William Segal for seven years in the 1950s.

History
The founder of Reporter Publications was also the publisher and editor of its flagship periodicals, American Fabrics and GENTRY. The former was an elegant trade magazine which included fabric samples attached to the pages. GENTRY was envisioned as "a magazine that could have a great cultural influence" and which would "allow people to see the esthetic element that was a factor in choosing clothing." The magazine was designed to be superior in every aspect of production with first rate printing, paper, design and content. Like Fleur Cowles' short-lived but elaborate fashion magazine for women, Flair, GENTRY included many innovative (and expensive) features like the inclusion of fabric swatches, booklets, limited prints, die-cuts and other unusual and influential design elements.

While GENTRY was largely aimed at an audience of men (with a stated goal of 100,000 subscribers), it offered a well-rounded content of fashion, art, sport, literature (the first publication in America with excerpts from Hermann Hesse's Siddhartha) and life-style all encompassed in a magazine of exceptional creativity and design. The magazine, begun in 1951, ceased publication in 1957, but its innovation and style are echoed in some of today's most creative publications like Nest, Flaunt and Visionaire.
