9. EGYPTIAN BURIAL AMULET Ca 1200-500 BC. Utilized during the mummification process, these small amulets had great religious significance, being attached to the body with prayers evoking protection for specific body members and organs and which were wrapped with the body. Always diminutive, surviving examples today became available as the result of unwrapping these mummies popular in the 19th century. This example of Anubis, the Jackal-headed god and the son of Osiris, 5/8" in length, conducted the dead to judgment. He was considered the inventor of embalming, the guardian of tombs. The Egyptians believed that at the judgment he weighed the heart of the dead against the feather of truth. One ear of this amulet, which may be worn as a pendant, is defective as made and glazed over. MB: $60
