25. [EARLY TYPOGRAPHY] Two original leaves from "Pandectarum, seu Digestorum Juris Civilis..." [Compilation, or Digest, of Civil Law], printed on laid paper at Paris by Francois Renault in 1539. An early Parisian printing of the complex code of current and ancient law with extensive commentary and interpretation. The body of the work appears in double column Black Letter Latin text with surrounding commentary in smaller type. This handsome edition is distinguished by the use of red ink in the titles and Uncial capital letters. Attractive specimens of the new two-color printing technology then rapidly replacing the hand-painted titles and initial letters of the earliest printed volumes. Light general toning; occasional light foxing; small marginal stain barely touching text of one leaf with bottom edge notch; else very nice. MB: $50
