26. [BOOK OF KINGS] Beautifully illuminated original manuscript leaf from the Shahnama or Book of Kings, ca. 1750-1800. One of the most famous Persian manuscripts by the poet Firdausi of Tus, it is one of the longest poems ever composed and recounts the history of Iran from the dawn of time to the Muslim Arab conquests of the seventh century AD. Very fine calligraphy on both sides in four columns of Ta 'liq script on polished paper, approx 6"x10". Margins are ruled in blue and gold with column bars of red and blue with decorative gold filigree. Titled at bottom recto in red script on a gold background with blue and gold side geometrics. Vibrant floral motifs on gold divide an unusual field of diagonal script at center. Attractively matted to reveal both sides of this magnificent artifact. Overall 12"x16". MB: $200
