George Nelson CSS wall unit, by Herman Miller, 1960s, walnut, four bays with extensive shelving and cabinetry, two uncommon lamps with white acrylic shades and stainless steel arms, drop-down cabinet with slide-out shelf for a turntable or printer and vertical slots for LP storage, two additional poles included but not shown, original curved metal pulls to all cabinets, some pulls stamped with Herman Miller mark, original finish, as shown: 129.25"w x 20"d x 87"h From the estate of a former Herman Miller employee.
Condition
No chips or cracks. All feet intact. Sturdy and structurally sound. Light stains to tops, but none are dark or prominent. Center drawer of far left cabinet is stiff. All other drawers in very good working order. All handles are intact. Very slight bend to one lamp so that the shade is not perfectly level. Drop front is in excellent condition. 9 extra connectors and two extra brackets for uprights are included. One extra side panel included. The upright poles are 80.5" high without including the adjustable feet. Two extra upright poles are included, and they are 90"h without including the adjustable feet. Light wear consistent with age and use over time. Note added 9/9/14: The maximum height with the feet fully extended is approximately 86.75". The extra poled could be cut and used to make horizontal brackets at the top of each pole that is in use. The owners built a high shelf to create tension above the poles.
The items on pages 130-133, lots 764-776, were purchased in 1958-60 by a Herman Miller employee in California. During her employment, she built a collection of iconic George Nelson and Charles & Ray Eames designs. Around 1970, she and her husband sold their modern house and moved to a dude ranch in Wyoming. They placed their collection of Herman Miller items in storage, where they remained for nearly 40 years.
The items on pages 130-133, lots 764-776, were purchased in 1958-60 by a Herman Miller employee in California.
