Uncolored, although the map has the phrase “the plots coloured green are ceded by treaty of 1795 to the States.” At outer edge of border: 18 ¾” x 25 1/8”. Storage creases, few tiny tears at creases’ intersections. Margins somewhat uneven (shaving the upper portion of the map number). Small bit of soil to verso (not visible from image side). Features the “Greenville Treaty Line,” marked on this map as “Indian boundary line agreeable to Treaty at Greenville in 1795 by Major General Anthony Wayne and the several Nations and Tribes of Indians of these Parts.” The treaty ceded 16 plots of land to the United States, including what are now downtown Chicago; the Sandusky, Ohio area; the Fort Detroit region; and the Maumee, Ohio area. For several years this was the official boundary between Indian territory and lands open to white pioneers, although it was common for the latter to disregard the boundary. This map shows the line as running from Fort Lawrence to near where St. Clair’s forces were defeated in 1791, then south to the intersection of the Ohio and Kentucky Rivers.
