Item Details
Description
[Virginia]. Land grant, signed by Benjamin Harrison (in his capacity as Governor of Virginia). Harrison’s signature, “Benj Harrison,” is in the margin at lower right. Laid paper, a few portions preprinted, with most of the text in secretarial hand. Seal in margin at lower left. The first name of the grantee is “Jacob,” but the last name is not entirely legible. (Probably “Sanger,” but the last name sometimes looks like “Songer” or “Longer”). Secretarial text reads “...in Consideration of the ancient Composition of five Shillings Sterling paid by Jacob... into the Treasury of this Commonwealth" there is granted by the said Commonwealth unto the said Jacob Sanger" a certain Tract or Parcel of Land, containing "Thirty eight acres by Survey bearing date the thirteenth day of May one Thousand Seven Hundred and Eighty, by and being in the County of Rockingham in the South East side of Cooks Creek [possibly “Coales Creek”] between the mouth of the said Creek and the north River of Shenandoah and Bounded as followith, To wit, Beginnning at two red oak saplins [sic] on the west side of the Creek Corner to his patent Land and with the lines of the same South five degrees, East one Hundred poles bridging the Creek to a pine in a valley, South Twenty degrees East Sixty five poles to two black Oak Saplins near a blazed pine in said Sanger... and with... north thirty degrees East one Hundred and twelve poles is a Stake in a line of Shanklins Land, and with the same north Sixty degrees West ninety poles to two Sycamores comes to Shanklins Survey and north Twenty Seven degrees west to the Beginning.” Lower portion’s blanks for the date also filled in secretarial hand: “first” Day of “May” in the Year of our Lord, One Thousand Seven Hundred and Eighty “four” and of the Commonwealth the “eighth.” At edges of sheet: 16 5/8” x 13 3/8”. 3 vertical and 1 horizontal contemporary folds. Folds are mostly split, with chipping. (In the line of text along the center horizontal fold, this eliminates legibility of several words. The first time the grantee’s last name appears, the last name is substantially chipped. Chipping to parts of some letters elsewhere on the document.) Edges also chipped. Verso has unsuccessful repairs along the folds (not visible from text side). Dampstaining. The same person who wrote the text wrote on 1 section of verso, “Jacob Sanger (sp?) is intitled to the within mentioned Tract of Land.” Below the notation is the signature of another person in the land office, “John Harwick L. Off.” In a different section of the verso, the person who wrote the text of the land grant jotted down “Exam’d Recorded and Entered.” Harrison was born ca. 1740, was a member of the House of Burgesses (1764), member of a committee of correspondence (1773), and delegate to the Continental Congress (beginning 1774). In addition to being a signer of the Declaration of Independence, “...as chairman of the committee of the whole house of congress, he introduced a resolution that had been offered three days before by Richard Henry Lee, declaring the independence of the American Colonies” (Appleton’s Cyclopaedia of American Biography Vol III, 1888, p96). Soon after his time in the Continental Congress, he was a member of the Virginia House of Delegates, Governor for 2 terms, and a delegate to the Virginia convention, where he opposed ratification of the new Constitution. His 3rd son was William Henry Harrison (9th President, who died in office within weeks of his inauguration). He was also the great grandfather of President Benjamin Harrison (1889-1893).
