Description
[Britain/Law]. [Thomas] Littleton and Edward Coke. THE FIRST PART OF THE INSTITUTES OF THE LAWES OF ENGLAND. Or, A Commentarie upon Littleton, not the name of a Lawyer onely, but of the Law it selfe… The Second Edition, corrected: With an Alphabeticall Table thereunto added. London: Printed by the Assignes of John More Esquire; and are to be sold by Richard More in S. Dunstans Churchyard. Anno 1629.[The “assignes” were M. Flesher, J. Haviland, and A. R. Young. See STC 15785.] The index has a separate woodcut title, which reads "A TABLE TO THE FIRST PART OF THE INSTITUTES…" 3 plates: 2 frontises (facing main woodcut title and 1st text page) + folding table (between leaves 18-19). Initial blank leaf is lacking, otherwise complete. Numbered by leaf (foliated), not numbered by page. [main woodcut title], [4-leaf Preface], I-125, [1], 126-395; [woodcut title for index] [34-leaf Index]. Collation: [main woodcut title], [4-leaf Preface], A-[Hh4], [Ii 1 on thin paper], [1 unsigned leaf on thin paper], Ii 2-Ii3, [Ii 4 on thick paper], Kk-[Fffff4], Ggggg-[GggggG3], [index’s woodcut title as Ggggg 4], index A-[G4], H[1]-[H6], in 4’s. Leaf 125 (Ii 1) is on thin paper, and its verso is blank. The recto of the subsequent unnumbered leaf is blank. The text that comes between Leaves 125 and 126 (which constitute Ii 1 and Ii 2) appears on the verso of the unnumbered leaf. Leaf 128 (Ii 4) is on thicker paper than the rest of the text leaves. 4to. Later diced calf. Spine loose, front joint weak. Small stains to frontis and main woodcut title. 1st frontis’s recto has notations (some in sepia, but also 1 pencil notation and 3 later ink notations: A Latin motto, “Sam Mellor,” and“H. Wadsworth March 5th 1918”). The rightmost inch of the 1st frontis’s recto has a tape reinforcement. Similar but narrower tape reinforcement to outer edge of Leaves 46-47. Both frontises’ image sides’ lower margins have an old ink ownership. Chipping to 1st frontis’s lower edge. Woodcut titles have close upper margin. Main woodcut title has small tear within printed area. Leaf 61: Repairs within text. Leaf 283: Open tear to text. Tear to margin of leaves 52, 194, 233. Leaf 237 and 1 other leaf have lower margin clipped. Stain to Leaf 218’s recto. Leaves 46-47 have chipping/darkening to upper edge. Occasional dampstain (usually minor, including the last index leaf’s outer margin and nearby letters). Old repair to margin of leaf 364. Some portions have old ink underlining in sepia, very small number of marginal notes inked in sepia, last index page has old ink number. Occasional small inkstain (usually marginal, although affecting a small amount of printed area of ff. 192, 193, 201 and a few other leaves, usually without loss of legibility). 1 page has a tiny drip of old red wax. Littleton’s Law French and Latin appear in black letter, with many words borrowed from Middle English. Coke’s modern English translation appears in the adjacent column. The commentary and notes are also in black letter, and the commentary and notes occupy most of the book’s content—often so extensive as to require a third column on the page or a few pages devoted to entirely to Coke’s analysis and commentary. STC 15785, 15788. ESTC S113341. 3 plates: 2 frontises + folding table. 2 woodcut title leaves (main title & index). Numerous woodcut letters.
