Description
[Missals]. 1 Volume, containing 5 works: ++ MISSALE ROMANUM, Ex Decreto Sacrosantci Concilii Tridentini Restitutum, Pii V. Pont. Max. Jussu Editum, Et Clementis VIII. Primum, Nunc Denuo Urbani Papae Octavi Auctoritate Recognitum… Lugduni, Ex Officna Petri Valfray, in vico Mercatorio… M. DC. LXXXIV… [Leiden: Pieter Valfray, 1684.] A beautiful missal printed in red and black in 2 columns enclosed within a double rule. Many woodcut initial letters. Appearances of printed musical score range in length from a few lines to several pages, usually accompanied by Latin lyrics. 9 engravings (8 full-page): Pages 18, 40, 242, 256, 278, 290, 306, verso of last preliminary leaf, and a small title page engraving. [1]-[40], I-588, civ, Index [4] pp, with page 227 mis-paginated “22” and corrected in pencil by a previous owner. Collation, [title leaf], a2-[a4], e[1]-e4, i[1]-[i4], o[1]-[o4], u[1]-[u4], A[1]-[V6], X[1]-[Y4], Z[1]-[3C6], 3D[1]-[3D4], a[1]-[ i6], signed in 6’s except for eight 4-leaf signatures (preliminaries, X, Y, and DDd). Minor foxing. Occasional small stains (resulting in small area of residue near center of engraving on p40 and text of a few pages, including, but not limited to pp243 and 247, the former being adjacent to an engraving). Evidence of prior adhesion between headlines of Index pages lvi-lvii. Creasing (usually corners and lower edge of any given leaf, but sometimes more extensive). Repair to margin and/or border of pp205-206, 235-236, 239-242, 243-246, and 241-242 (overlapping plate mark of the full-page engraving on p242, but not affecting its image). Marginal chip to 3 leaves that have an engraving (last preliminary leaf, pages241-[242], and pp305-306, not affecting images). Other marginal chips include, but are not limited to, pp143-144, 203-204, 237-238, 309-310, 449-450, 491-492, 555-556, and a few ending leaves. Occasional tear (usually marginal, within text of pp491-492). Separately printed broadside bound in between pp436-437: DIE XVI. MAII. JOANNIS NEPOMUCENI MARTYRIS. Missia de Com. Mart. Temp. Pasch. Tear to last 2 lines of the broadside’s leftmost column. ++ MISSAE PROPRIAE SANCTORUM Ad usum Fratrum Minorum Sancti Francisci Conventualium, Monialium Sanctae Clarae, ac Tertii Ordinis utriusque sexus, A Sacra Rituum Congregatione noviter recognitae, & approbatae. Jussu Reverendissimi Patris Magistri Joannis Baptistae Minucci… Venice: Balleoniana, 1743. Contains the prayers and hymns for November (probably part of a larger series). Printed in red and black, in 2 columns. Musical score and lyrics occupy most of pp34-35. Small title page engraving. [title], [verso], iii-x, I-41 pp. Collation: [title leaf], A2-A8, B[1]-[B8], C[1]-[C10]. Dampstaining. Areas of residue on pp16-21. A little foxing. Chip to the edge of the text of 1st text leaf and slightly within text of pp19-20, and slightly within the music on p34. A little foxing. ++ Appearing immediately after Missae Propriae Sanctorum… are pages 46-47 of another work. Both pages consist of musical score and Latin song lyrics printed in red and black, although the typography is not a perfect match for any of the other works in this volume. Page 46’s unprinted recto is mounted to an inserted leaf and has a repair occupying about 1/5 of its printed side. Page 47’s verso is partially mounted. ++ SUPPLEMENTUM MISSALIS, In quo continentur Missae ab An. 1700. Usque ad An. 1734… jussu R. R. P. P. Superiorum ejusdem Provinciae editum An. 1734. (Title, privilege statement, and printing date appear at top of the first text page. Base of last printed page: Solodori, Tipii Ursi Heuberger.) A[1]-[B4], in 4’s, unpaginated. Fairly inconsequential foxing, very good plus. ++ MISSAE SANCTROUM DE QUIBUS IN COLLEGIATA SS. URSI, VICTORIS, AC SOCIORUM MARTYRUM THEBAEORUM ECCLESIA SOLODORENSI OFFICIUM CERTIS… Impressae Solodori: In Typographia Joannis Bernardi, Per Micahelem Werlin. Anno M. DC. LXVI. [1666.] [7] leaves, signed A[1]-D[1], in 2’s, unpaginated. (Possibly incomplete. See Worldcat 826995115 and 827678095.). Slight foxing and small stains here and there. Title page shows evidence of prior adhesion. ++ DIE XVIII. MARTII. IN FESTO S. GABRIELIS ARCHANGELI. [2] leaves. Previously bound in at rear of volume, now separated. Foxed, creased. ++ The whole bound in purple velvet-covered boards with a metal ornament at each corner. Center of each cover features a small metal vignette showing a saint with a halo, churches and other buildings in the background. Bdg worn, soiled, covers separated/insecure, ornaments show varying degrees of tarnishing. Decorative ribbons discolored and frayed, lacking ffep. The arm of the upper clasp is lacking. The outside of the volume remains attractive. The binder added several tabs to the outer edge of certain leaves. Now housed in a custom gray cloth clamshell case (later than the volume’s binding).
