[Newspapers/McKinley/Truman/Dewey]. 10 Newspaper Issues. Articles include McKinley's inauguration and assassination, death of Franklin Roosevelt, WWII combat, WWII-era fears of "robot attacks" on US, Truman's victory over Dewey, a bridge collapse, the franking privilege, and the Civil Rights issue in the late 1960's. Lg. folio. In general, only the front pages have been examined. No interior sections (lacking for some newspapers, but the earlier newspapers were presumably 4 pages per issue). Mostly very good, mostly marginal tears and wear, to some degree affecting printed areas. Sold with all faults. ++ SATURDAY GLOBE. Utica [NY]: Mar. 6, 1897. Left column’s headline: “McKinley’s First Day.” Large illustration (lithographed color) of troops marching in formation. ++ COSCHOCTON DAILY AGE. Oshocton, OH: Sep. 14, 1901. Several front page articles on Pres. McKinley’s assassination. Front page includes large general headline “Sorrowing: Members of the Cabinet In Session at Buffalo: Arranging State Funeral…” ++ ALMA RECORD. Alma, MI, Sep. 6, 1901. Main front page headline: “McKinley Assassinated: Shot While Shaking Hands With a Stranger: Dastardly Deed Committed at 3:52 and the President was Supposed to be Dead at 4:30. Bullets were Extracted and He Revived and Last Reports Say is Resting Easy. Was Shot Through Abdomen.” Horizontal c-fold largely split. ++ THE PITTSBURGH COMMERCIAL. May 5, 1973. At upper left is the headline “Bridge Horror: Shocking Occurrence at Dixon, Illinois. Over Ninety Persons Drowned, While Assembled to Witness the Rite of Baptism.” In the 3rd column from the left, 1st article’s 1st paragraph begins “The Government Printing office at present is doing a prodigious amount of work, in anticipation of the going into effect of the law abolishing the franking privilege. There are just fifty-seven days…” 3rd column also includes a correction to an earlier report of General Sherman offering a bounty for Modoc scalps. Sticker below newspaper’s name: “Hon H Fish.” ++ Apr. 1, 1870. On the front page, 2nd column from left, under the headline “Congress” is news related to the Civil War-era Federal income tax, which had not yet been repealed, and 2 Senators from Texas taking the oath of office. Front page, leftmost column includes coverage of the issue of whether members of the House of Representatives from Texas should be allowed to take office, with the text describing one of them as a “Democratic carpet-bagger…” Sticker overlapping newspaper’s name: “Hon H Fish.” ++ THE EVENING STAR. Sec. A only, 16pp. Nov. 3, 1948. Several post-election Wednesday articles under headline “Dewey Concedes Defeat.” Several tears within text (the result of brittle paper), crease at upper corner. ++ THE DENVER POST. Wednesday, Nov. 3, 1948. Above newspaper’s title: “Nation Sweeps Truman, Democrats Into Office.” Tear affecting 2 letters of “Office,” chip within printed area at lower right of front page. ++ THE JOHNSTOWN DEMOCRAT. Wednesday, Nov. 8, 1944. Several front page election articles. Largest headline: “Roosevelt Leading: Many Papers Conceding FDR Victory: Manager of Dewey Claims Vote Still Too Inconclusive.” Multiple WWII-related front page articles, including “Navy Fliers Destroy 249 Jap Planes: Sink, Damage 10 Ships in Second Attack on Manila.” Below that is the article “Robot Attacks on U. S. Seen.” ++ NORFOLK VIRGINIAN-PILOT. Apr. 13, 1945.
