Beebe won Yale’s Richard Memorial Prize for poetry but was later expelled from the University. From 1933-1944 Beebe wrote a column for the New York Herald Tribune, covering nightclubs, restaurants, etc., especially those catering to high society. Beebe wrote a column for Gourmet magazine, “Along the Boulevard.” After Clegg and Beebe met, in 1948 they planned a move to Virginia City, Nevada, where Beebe had previously visited in 1940 to write a review of the movie “Virginia City”. Soon Beebe purchased and redecorated a Pullman train car – the Gold Coast – and reactivated a newspaper, The Territorial Enterprise, which they sold in 1961 before moving to San Francisco. Both before and after the move, their work as railroad photographers and authors required them to travel widely, as they did in their private rail car. Beebe authored over 35 books, nearly half of which were co-authored by Clegg, mostly pertaining to trains and railroads. From 1960 and until his death, Beebe wrote a column for the San Francisco Chronicle covering diverse subjects. He used his own funds to buy Virginia City a new fire engine. Together Beebe and Clegg bought an additional private rail car naming it “Virginia City”. Clegg hired a Hollywood set designer, Robert Hanley, to decorate it. Roughly $375,000 was spent on the project, which included glass chandeliers, silk drapes, marble fireplace, an 18th century mirror, and a painted reproduction of the Sistine Chapel. When Beebe died in 1966, Clegg inherited most of his estate (roughly $2 million).
