97. GEORGE WYTHE (1726-1806). American Revolutionary patriot and jurist. A Signer of the Declaration of Independence, he drafted a protest of the Stamp Act as a member of the Virginia House of Burgesses. One of the early abolitionists, he freed his own slaves and provided for them in his will. Beautifully penned DS "G. Wythe," 1p, 9½"x15", County of Westmoreland, VA, Oct 1770. Financial claim filed by executors of the estate of Capel Hamburg against the estate of Gawin Corbin, for which Hannah Lee Corbin, his widow, and Richard Henry Lee were the executors. Boldly signed by Wythe as attorney for the plaintiff. Fold separations with some paper loss have been repaired with archival tape on verso; edge nicks and small tears with paper loss away from text; light general toning, darker on left portion. With all faults, text is dark and signature is near pristine. MB: $500
