Fine group of 70+ letters from generals, officers, businessmen and friends of Gen. Robert C. Richardson, all sent to him upon his transfer to Hawaii to serve as Commanding General of the Hawaiian Department, Military Governor of Hawaii, and Commanding General of U.S. Army Forces in the Pacific Ocean Areas -- a position he would hold from May, 1943 until the end of the war. Among those writing Richardson are generals CLARE H. ARMSTRONG; LLOYD D. BROWN, major general, commanded 28th Infantry; ANDREW D. BRUCE, major general commanding 77th Infantry; HARRY D. CHAMBERLIN, brigadier general and equestrian; J. LAWTON COLLINS, then heading the 25th Div., JOHN DELAFIELD, WALTER A. DELAMATER, C. P. GEORGE, FREDERICK GILBREATH, JACK W. HEARD, Fifth Armored Div.; JOHN R. HODGE, RALPH HOSPITAL, RALPH PENNELL, IRVING PHILLIPSON, MARTIN F. SCANLON, and lower ranking officers, friends, etc. Many have signed using first name, almost all on official letterhead with much familiar and personal content.
