Description
U.S. ARMY ASSESSMENT OF HAWAIIAN GOVERNMENT, 1943
Fascinating report on the history and political state of Hawaii, prepared for incoming the Military Governor, Lieut Gen. Robert C. Richardson, Jr.. The typed report, 23pp. 4to., is indicated on the routing slip as having been prepared by: "...a very smart young officer of the G-2 section who was formerly a political reporter for the Star-Bulletin". The report, stamped "CONFIDENTIAL" throughout, briefly touches on the history of the islands, but largely concentrates on providing analyses of opinions toward the mainland and five individuals ("The Big Five") said to have the most political clout. These five, who are carefully examined, include Gov. Ingram Stainback, Joseph Farrington, J. Garner Anthony, and newspapermen Lorrin Thurston and Riley Allen. Many other leaders are also picked apart. Fascinating content. From Richardson's files, and sold with 6pp. photocopy of "Postal Censorship Intercepts" presumably made for Richardson, Feb. 13, 1945, comments excerpted from soldier's letters concerning his performance. Very good.
