Description
16TH CENTURY AUSTRIAN CROSSBOW, WINDER, AND BOLT
Late 15th Century Austrian or German crossbow, complete with the original winder and one bolt. This exquisite hunting piece measures 35" long, with a 36 1/2" steel arm. The oak stock is inset with bone and mother of pearl mythical creatures including serpents and dragons, and it terminates with 4" sections of ebony. The top surface is entirely covered in striated bone. The trigger is fitted at bottom. The steel arms of the bow were once decorated with strawberries and gilt leaves - the design remains discernable though the gilding has been lost. Bowstring and lashings all appear to be original to the piece. The 17" crank winder is fully operational, with the notched shaft bearing the name "BARTOLOME", likely the Austrian bowmaker "Bartolomew" of the time. Also present is a bolt, 14 1/2" long, the fletching largely lost. The bow and bolt both bear museum marking from the items' deaccession over forty years ago. A superlative relic, in very good condition.
