Description
1600S SPANISH SHORT SWORD
Fine Spanish short sword or dagger, 15 3/4" beveled blade, 21" long overall. The top of the blade bears a chiseled design, and the hallmark is an encircled "R" with a crown at top. The triangular-shaped hand guard is not affixed to the pommel at top, but is secured to the cross guard with two round head screws. The hand guard bears a device including a crown and "F III" representative of Spanish King Felipe III (1578-1621). The design is surrounded by filigree upon a background pattern of raised dots. There is a small area of corrosion at center. The simple cross guard is 13 1/4" wide. The wire of the grip is intricately woven with braiding at top and bottom and remains tight and fully intact. The pommel nut is four-sided and topped with lines radiating from the center. A rare sword in overall very good condition.
