Description
JOSHUA L. CHAMBERLAIN
(1828-1914) Union brigadier general of the 20th Maine whose valiant defense of Little Round Top prevented the Confederates from turning the line at Gettysburg. Chamberlain was also present at Lee's surrender at Appomattox. Interesting D.S. as Governor of Maine, 4pp. 10" x 15", May 13, 1868, his official conveyance to the European and North American Railway: "...all the timber and lands...situated upon the waters of the Penobscot and Saint John Rivers, to be used...in the construction of its contemplated line of railway..." for the sum of $1.00. An additional provision addresses an agreement with another railway to provide a branch line. Signed with a large, very fine signature at conclusion, also signed by the Maine Secretary of State and Attorney General. Damp stain at upper-portion of document slightly affects about twenty words of text, else very good. The rail line was successfully built, added to a transcontinental system joining Canada and the U.S., and remains in operation today.
