Description
J. E. B. STUART, JR. SEEKS THE BODY OF AN OFFICER OF THE 3RD TEXAS CAVALRY
A large grouping of copy letters from J. E. B. Stuart, Jr. (1860-1930), the son of the Confederate major general of the same name concerning his efforts to locate the grave of Col. Joseph Phillips of the 3rd Texas Cavalry, killed in the assault on Fort Butler, Donaldsonville, La. In all there are about 31 letters from Stuart whose dogged efforts spanned several months. Stuart maintained an album of letterpress copies of his letters, and responses received, which included some from Gen. JOHN B. GORDON, HENRY C. CORBIN (4), C. C. BEAVENS (Color Bearer of the 7th Louisiana at Gettysburg, captured at the Wilderness), members and commanders of U.C.V., along with four brief accounts of the ill-fated Confederate assault on the fortification written by Confederate survivors, and more. Phillips actually was a Virginian who led the burning of Hampton by first torching his own home to prevent it from falling into Yankee hands. A fascinating chase for information on the whereabouts of a KIA officer's body.
