(1791 - 1868) Fifteenth President of the United States whose hands-off attitude toward states' rights directly contributed to the start of the Civil War. Front panel of an envelope addressed and franked by Buchanan: "Free James Buchanan Peter Force Esquire Washington City". Lightly toned, matted with an engraving of Buchanan and descriptive text and set into an attractive wood frame. PETER FORCE (1790-1868) was a politician, archivist, and historian, most remembered for his American Archives and historic document collection.
