GROVER CLEVELAND
(1837 - 1908) 22nd and 24th President of the United States, supported civil service and fiscal reform. Partly-printed D.S. as President, 1p. folio parchment, Washington, Jan. 10, 1887, the appointment of John G. Leefe to serve as "Captain in the Nineteenth Regiment of Infantry". Boldly signed by Cleveland, also signed by Secretary of War WILLIAM C. ENDICOTT. Mailing folds, otherwise, clean, bright and fine condition. Leefe served as a lieutenant colonel of the 162nd N.Y. Infantry in the Civil War. He then took a commission as lieutenant in the 19th Infantry in which he would serve for the next 33 years, commanding a regiment in the Spanish-American War in Puerto Rico and in the Philippines.
