Description
WILHELM II
(1859 - 1941) "Kaiser Wilhelm", Emperor of Germany and King of Prussia, a socially progressive ruler whose reign ended with Germany's defeat in World War I. A superb oversize presentation S.P. delivered by one of the kaiser's closest American friends to a man who would one day lead all American army forces against the Japanese in the Pacific. The enormous 15 1/2" x 19 1/2" photo shows Kaiser Wilhelm in military uniform with Iron Crosses and Pour le Merite gazing sternly at the viewer. At lower left he has signed in purple indelibel pencil and added: "Doorn 1930". At top appears an A.N.S. by POULTNEY BIGELOW (1855-1954), American journalist and author, a close friend and biographer of the kaiser and for a while a supporter of Hitler and Mussolini. Bigelow writes: "This picture was entrusted to me by His Majesty Wm. II for Colonel Richardson, commandant of the U.S. Military Academy - West Point & thus my happy task ends" Signed and dated 1930. At bottom, Gen. ROBERT C. RICHARDSON, JR. (1882-1954), who would command Army forces in the Pacific in World War II, notes: "Sent by the Kaiser to Col. Robert C. Richardson after the Kaiser's grandson had been entertained at West Point". Fine condition.
