(1888 - 1957) American aviator and explorer, first to fly over the South Pole and established the base "Little America". T.L.S. "Dick" on Navy Dept. letterhead, 1p. 4to., Washington, Nov. 4, 1946. Byrd congratulates Maj. Polan Banks on "getting some more Medals", and mentions: "This Expedition will be announced in public within two or three weeks. We don't want certain other nations to know about it until it is too late for them to go down…". Fine. Sold with an unrelated Byrd Antarctic Expedition Second Cancellation postal cover, cancelled at Little America on Jan. 30, 1935, received and canceled in San Francisco 15 months later, Mar. 25, 1935. Unopened. Operation Highjump followed, involving 15 Navy ships and multiple aircraft mapping an are of the Antarctic half the size of the U.S.
