Description
MARTIN LUTHER KING, JR. PROGRAM
Very early program for an appearance by King, prior to any of the marches or protests for which he is widely remembered. The 22pp. large 4to program promotes an appearance by King, Mahalia Jackson, Sammy Davis, Jr. and Floyd Patterson at Pittsburgh's Forbes Field on July 9, 1961 to benefit the NAACP and King's S.C.L.C. Patrons and advertisers are listed, as well as the day's events which also included awards being given to Count Basie and Roberto Clemente. Near the end of the program, Dr. Kelly M. Smith introduced "Alabama and Mississippi Freedom Riders". The Summer of 1961 saw the height of activism by the Freedom Riders, who met violence and saw their buses burned at the hands of the Klan and local police. Very good.
